Practical tools for faithful ministry
A pastor’s week can include sermon preparation, a difficult conversation, a volunteer schedule, a meeting, and a building problem that apparently belongs to the pastor because nobody knows who else to call.
If you serve a small church, work another job, or lead with limited staff, you know how quickly those responsibilities fill the available hours.
The Pastor’s Workbench is a place to think carefully about that work and find practical ways to do it well.
I’m Joe Cook. I write about the responsibilities pastors and ministry leaders carry: studying and teaching Scripture, leading people, communicating clearly, organizing recurring work, and using technology with sound judgment.
Some articles will deal with AI. Others will deal with a meeting that needs a clear purpose, a volunteer who needs a usable assignment, or a ministry commitment that needs to be reconsidered. The question is whether an idea helps us serve faithfully in the church we actually have.

The main article arrives on Tuesdays. You’ll also find short practical pieces on the website and brief observations in Substack Notes.
I’ll explain the problem, work through a realistic example, and give you something you can use. You won’t need to buy software or join a paid membership to put the main idea into practice.
The writing is intended especially for small-church, bivocational, and understaffed pastors. Ministry leaders and volunteers who share that work are welcome here too.
